“I think you’ll need to go up a size..”

the tailor casually said as I got fitted for a suit.

He didn’t think anything of it, but  it landed like a punch to the gut.

Standing in front of that mirror, bloated, soft, and uncomfortable in clothes I used to wear with confidence…

I suddenly realized I didn’t recognize myself.

It was like I was looking at someone else.I was the heaviest I’d ever been.

But it wasn't always like this

In my 20s, fitness was easy.I had the time. The energy. The structure.

I owned my own gym.

I could train 5–6 days a week, meal prep like a bodybuilder, and track every macro.

But when I transitioned into the tech industry everything changed.

Deadlines.

Endless flights.

Constant stress.

On calls across time zones, squeezing workouts between meetings, and trying to stay “on track” while navigating client dinners and 5 hours of sleep.

I knew what to do.

But I couldn’t seem to do it consistently anymore.

My weight crept up. My cardio dropped.

“Easy” jogs became an uphill slog and I was losing the rhythm I used to rely on.

And with it, the confidence that used to come from being in control of my body started to fade.

It was like carrying around a suit of armor that no longer fit, heavy, awkward, unfamiliar.

At first, I chalked it up to a rough season.

Work was chaotic.

Travel picked up.

I’d “dial it back in soon enough.”

But the months dragged on and so did the extra weight.

Then one morning, I caught my reflection in the mirror, shirt off, gut hanging a little further than I remembered.

I didn’t even recognise the guy staring back.

That was the moment it hit me, right in the stomach..

The tailor’s comment from weeks before echoed in my head:

“I think you’ll need to go up a size…”

He was talking about the suit.

But I knew he wasn’t just measuring fabric.

I was becoming the cliché 'the guy who used to be in shape.

That was the moment I realized:

What used to work in my 20’s… no longer did.

And if I wanted to turn this around, I’d need a completely different approach.

Not just what I was doing, but how I thought about all of it.

I became obsessed.

I didn’t just do research on the internet.

I went back to grad school in the evening to study performance nutrition, then a PhD in human performance.

I looked into blood work, metabolic health, minimum effective training.

And I rebuilt my own routine from the ground up, this time not around perfection, but around what’s actually repeatable in a busy, high-stakes life.

I let go of trying to be a rigid bodybuilder and focused on being durably lean, strong, mobile, and healthy, even when life gets messy.

It wasn’t always smooth. But it started to work

I was seeing some results, then I asked myself a question,

"What if trying harder is the problem?"

This changed everything, I stopped trying to be perfect...

Instead, I focused on being predictable, building routines I could actually follow, even during busy weeks, travel, or stress.

I trained less, but with more intention.

I stopped doing extreme diets focused on key habits that moved the needle.

I learned when to put the foot on the gas and when to ease off.

And I stopped burning out, starting over, and blaming myself every time life got in the way.
